Make Every Encounter Count

Whenever you encounter one of the people who work for you, you have an opportunity to make that encounter contribute to your objectives. You can use the time to help accomplish the mission. You can use the time to help care for your people.

Every time you encounter one of the people who work for you, set a good example. Act like you want your people to act. Pay attention to the things you think are important.

Every time you encounter one of the people who work for you, seize the opportunity to share your key messages. Tell your people what you expect. Tell them what you value.

Every time you encounter one of the people who work for you, seize the opportunity to evaluate their behavior and performance. Learn what they do well. Learn what needs improvement.

Every time you encounter one of the people who work for you, seize the opportunity to coach and correct. Use the time to help your subordinate build competence and self-confidence.

Every time you encounter one of the people who work for you, take time to listen. Be proactive about this. Ask people what they think. Then really listen to what they say. Clarify your understanding and thank them for their comments.

Every encounter with someone who works for you is another opportunity for you to help people grow and succeed as you work at accomplishing the mission together. Be sure to take time to evaluate your performance as well as their performance. Discover what works so you can do more of it.

Encounters with people who work for you are golden opportunities to do leadership work. Maximize them by showing up a lot. Maximize their value by concentrating on communication and making it count.
