How do you know if you're in a dead-end job?

For my coaching clients for whom this was an issue, knowing started in the gut. They "just felt like" they were never going anywhere from the job they were in.

Assuming you've got that gut feeling, here are some things to do.

Start by analyzing where you want to go from where you are. I've seen two basic answers to that question. Some people want more interesting work. Some people want to move higher up the corporate tree trunk.

It's worth noting that sometimes a dead-end job is the right place to be for a while. That was the case with one of my clients.

He had taken a job with a prominent firm in his industry, only to discover that he was an absolutely awful fit for the company. He needed to get out of where he was.

He took a job with another firm in the industry where he had no opportunity for promotion or for more interesting work. That position helped support him while he searched for the right job, and because it was in the same industry he was able to maintain his professional network. That network ultimately helped him land a job with a company that was a great fit for him and offered lots of opportunity for better positions in the future.
