How do I improve my standing in the workplace?

There are actually a couple of simple keys to improving your standing in the workplace.

First, find out what your boss wants from you in order to give you a great review. Go for clarity. Once you know what the boss wants, deliver it.

Next, concentrate on the most important one or two things to do each day. No one has enough time or energy to do everything. You know what's most important (you've asked the boss, right?) so make sure it gets done.

Concentrate on results. Excuses don't count. What you coulda, woulda, shoulda done means nothing in the long run.

Don't be shy about reminding the boss of what good things you've accomplished. I'm not suggesting an email packed with horn-blowing. Instead, like a good talk show guest, work your message into other communications. "This is a lot like that Guru Project, where I ..."
