How do you get employees to stay? Is it vesting?
Vesting, at best, is a strategy for keeping employees from leaving. What you want is for the people who work for you to not only stay at your company, but to become engaged and effective workers there. You do that by creating a great working environment.
Great working environments offer interesting and meaningful work. Work can be meaningful because of its contribution to the organization's goals or to the greater good of society. Classic credit unions have that to offer.
Great working environments provide clear and reasonable expectations for what work is to be done. Reasonable goals, supported with sufficient resources of people, money and time are how this happens.
Great working environments provide regular and usable feedback on performance. This is a primary role of the immediate boss and one which many shirk because they've never been trained in how to communicate one-on-one with their subordinates.
Great working environments are fair environments. People do not have to draw high salaries or have fabulous benefit packages, but they do need to feel that they are fairly compensated relative to other folks in the organization and to those doing similar work elsewhere. After that, fairness is a matter of having consequences match up to performance.
Great working environments provide a predictably consistent atmosphere. Study after study has shown us that there are all kinds of leadership styles that work, but that the individual leader needs to be consistent so that folks know what to expect.
Great working environments give people the maximum control possible over their work life. Many organizations and bosses treat their workers more like third graders than like adults. The general rule is that you let folks make the maximum number of decisions about their work that's possible.
